Ben was first and foremost beloved by all who knew him. He was just that kind of guy. He was my eldest son, a friend (and kindred spirit) to TJ, Suzi's little brother and Cayce's big brother ... beyond that he was a very talented artist and musician of mixed Native American/Filipino heritage. He was very popular, full of life and compassion. He had a genius IQ, according to his doctors, and that often carries a burden with it ... He also suffered from Bi-Polar Mental Illness (often called Manic-Depression). His intellect and talent didn't make life any easier for him, especially in light of the fact that he refused to take medication for the manic-depression. He was afraid it would dull his creativity. Like many people who suffer from mental illness, he self-medicated. In simple English, he was an alcoholic and drug addict. He tried his best to make it all work, but in January 1995 he committed suicide at the age of 21. We believe he chose to step from this wheel of life to the next in hopes he could get it right the next time. His passing devastated not only his immediate family in Hawaii, but many, many friends and relatives on the mainland US and in Canada. Suzanne and I are donating the proceeds of sales of our pieces below. Cayce, who is lead singer and guitarist of the Maui, Hawaii based metal band Khrinj is donating proceeds of the Khrinj albums offered here as well. The proceeds of all these sales will be donated to White Bison to support their Native American Wellbriety programs. If you are not interested in purchasing anything here, we hope you will consider going to their website and making a direct cash donation in Ben's name. We would like to think that if he had been able to have access to their resources he might have made another decision and would still be here with us. Ben left a very varied body of works of graphic art, poetry and song lyrics. We will be compiling hiswork into a book in time and offering it for sale on this page. Clicking on any photo except the album covers will take you to a larger version of it. In case you were not aware, photos rendered for the web are not nearly as fine detailed as at the commercial print resolutions we use when we print for sale.
